Activities from our books

Simply Great Math Activities - Algebra Readiness Click here to download "Menu Math" (31k), an example of an activity from "Simply Great Math Activities: Algebra Readiness".

Students will learn the meaning and use of variables and will be able to substitute values into equations to solve them. This activity is easy to customize for any grade level and has many extensions. Since your students will perform so well and learn so many fundamental algebra skills easily you may feel guilty for taking a paycheck!
Simply Great Math Activities - Number Sense Click here to download "TanGram Fractions" (103k), an example of an activity from "Simply Great Explorations in Geometry".

Students will develop an intuitive understanding of fractional relationships and reinforce geometric vocabulary in this geometric model. Students will analyze standard and nonstandard tangrams to determine the fractional value of the pieces. As they compare pieces they will also develop algebra relationships naturally.
Simply Great Math Activities - Number Sense Click here to download "Pyramid Math" (151k), a portion of an activity from "Simply Great Math Activities: Number Sense".

This creative practice activity facilitates discovery of number patterns and develops number sense. The activity works with fractions, decimals, percents, positive and negative numbers. Because it is easy to create and self-checking, it is easy for the teacher and engaging for the students.
Simply Great Math Activites - Fractions, Decimals and Percents Click here to download "Fraction Number Line" (119k), an example of an activity from "Simply Great Math Activities: Fractions, Decimals, & Percents".

If you want to build number sense with fractions, if you want to help students see the connections between fractions, decimals, and percents - if you want to generate rich mathematical discussion - then this quick and easy activity is for you. Use it as a planned activity, a warmup, or a quick filler.
More Power 2 You Click here to download "The Power of Two" (104k), an example of an activity from "More Power to You."

A truly tangible way to introduce exponents! Astonish your students with a model of exponential growth. They will see the value of exponential notation as they put it to use. They will even be able to tell you why 20=1 !
The Pattern and Function Connection Click here to download "The Great Yo-Yo Festival," (53k), an example of an activity from "The Pattern and Function Connection."

Years ago, when our own algebra teachers introduced us to the formula "y = mx + b", we were told that "m" stood for slope and "b" stood for the y-intercept.  If we asked why that was, the teacher probably shrugged and said, "It just is.  Don't worry, it will all make sense eventually."  Now it does!
