You asked-we listened! Many of you have asked for DVD’s of our activities showing how to implement these in your own classroom. Now you can get comprehensive modeling and support to make the most of your instructional time. Each DVD comes with downloadable PDF files of everything you need to teach the activity.
NOTE: You may purchase materials is by using our downloadable Order Form, which allows you to purchase by check or Purchase Order.
This document serves as a guide for the educator who wishes to conduct a Teacher to Teacher Press workshop featuring Bill Lombard and Brad Fulton. While you can’t replace the interactive nature of a live workshop, this DVD format provides some distinct advantages for your school or district. By purchasing these DVD’s you own this workshop and can conduct it over and over. As you hire new staff, they can benefit from the same training your veteran teachers have enjoyed. These DVD’s are also inexpensive when you compare them to hiring a consultant. You can also take as much time as you want to proceed through the series. You may wish to view five or so of them in one day. On the other hand, some districts find these to be great assets for department meetings and collaboration time. It’s your choice, and we encourage you to adapt these to fit the needs of your site and your staff.
Teaching Two-Digit Multiplication through Conceptual Layering
Multiplication makes sense as it never has before! Inventor Guy Foresman and master teacher Brad Fulton demonstrate how to use a powerful tool called Conceptual Layering to empower your students. Beginning with the most basic levels of kinesthetic and visual instruction, Guy and Brad take you on a seamless and incremental journey that ends with a rigorous application of multiplying binomials. Learn how to use the technique of Conceptual Layering to empower your students in other areas of your mathematics instruction as well.Students will understand multiplication when they see this logical progression of instruction. Teachers will understand how to better reach struggling learners using the instructional style called “Conceptual Layering”. Instruction will develop from visual and kinesthetic models to multiplying binomials in algebra. Appropriate for grades four through algebra.DVD length: 33 min. Handout: 25 pages
Menu MathStudents will quickly pick up on the meaning and use of variables and will be able to substitute values into formulas to solve them using this easy-to-teach activity. Our signature activity has made algebra understandable for students in primary grades through college! Algebraic expressions, word problems, combining like terms, the properties of algebra, solving equations, and systems of equations are suddenly clear to even struggling students. This creative approach will intrigue and engage everyone in your class. The complete handout includes adaptations for primary, upper elementary, and middle school and high school settings.DVD length: 31 min. Handout: 36 pages
Math Projects Double DVD SetIn this 2-volume DVD Brad and Bill share some of their favorite student projects. At conferences and workshops one of the most-often asked for items is student projects. After watching these DVD’s you will be able to show your students how to demonstrate their artistic talents while creating powerful mathematics!Math Projects are a beautiful way to embed mathematics concepts, increase learning, foster critical thinking, and utilize authentic assessment. This presentation will show you how easily you can accomplish all of these goals. Six projects integrate rich mathematics with measurement and art to make the most of divergent learning modalities. Students will study fractions, decimals, percents, proportions, pie charts, fractals, exponential growth, the Pythagorean theorem, volume, surface area, and spatial visualization. Management and assessment tips are included. Projects include: The Venn Diagram Project, A Day in My Life, Baravelle’s Spiral, The Exponential Growth Project, The Pythagorean Spiral, and Isometric Drawing. Check out our student work site to see real student-created samples.DVD length: 124 min.
Fast Facts and FractionsIf you’ve struggled teaching fraction concepts and operations to your students, this DVD is for you! Using a simple 12×12 grid you will find ways to show students how to perform the four basic operations on fractions. This DVD also shares methods of reducing (simplifying) fractions and solving ratio & proportion problems. Students will also gain a tremendous amount of number sense along the way!Do you want your students to master their multiplication facts or master fraction operations? Now you won’t have to choose! Classroom-tested with intervention students, this strategy will enable even struggling students to memorize their multiplication facts, simplify fractions, add and subtract fractions of unlike denominators, and multiply and divide fractions. Your students’ confidence will soar as they learn the skills that will help them on tests. The handout contains everything you need to begin success tomorrow!DVD length: 38 min. Handout: 33 pages
Hundreds MagicStudents will be so amazed at the patterns they find in the hundreds chart they will think you are a “mathemagician”. Once hooked, they will use algebra to understand the magic. Algebra is engaging, clear, and magical with this innovative approach. Students are so absorbed in the fun they don’t even realize the rich algebra they are using. Distribution, factoring, combining like terms, writing and solving expressions, and more are covered. Your students will want to come back to this lesson again and again throughout the year. DVD length: 40 min. Handout: 18 pages
X Marks the SpotThe rules are so simple you can teach them without saying a word! Yet the math is rich and abundant. You can use these simple drills to reinforce basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts and develop number sense without boring your students. Fractions, decimals, and negative numbers can also be used. You can even factor polynomials using this simple method! This activity works on so many levels. Help students practice all four operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and integers. Develop critical skills in mathematical reasoning. Facilitate factoring of polynomials. Even solve those difficult combined work problems in algebra. The handout contains rich and all-inclusive practice opportunities. This activity is a must for teachers from grades four through algebra.DVD length: 34 min. Handout: 17 pages
Integer StrategiesUnderstanding integers is fundamental to working with algebra. This DVD will share creative ways that enable you to show your students how to perform operations with integers.Integers are a common tripping point for students moving into middle school and high school mathematics. Help your students gain an understanding of signed numbers as they gain computational fluency. Four creative and classroom-proven strategies are demonstrated clearly. Students will learn both the how to and the why of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers. A comprehensive handout provides plenty of innovative practice opportunities.DVD length: 42 min. Handout: 32 pages
The Power of TwoAt last – a truly tangible way to introduce exponents! Astonish your students with a model of exponential growth. They will see the value of exponential notation as they put it to use. They will even be able to tell you why 20 = 1!Why is n0=1? Why do negative exponents result in fractions? These are questions that are easily addressed in this masterful approach to teaching exponents. Your students will not only know the answers to these questions, they will know why exponents behave this way. This creative lesson is essential for anyone teaching exponents. The handout includes instructions for a innovative culminating project.DVD length: 26 min. Handout: 11 pages
Leo’s Patterns
This activity visits the famous Fibonacci sequence, and students find algebra in the patterns, formulas, and equations. It’s nice for the teacher since much of the work is self-correcting! Students build Guess and Check skills, develop the problem solving skill of Working Backward, and learn to combine like terms. The structure of the activity works with positive, negative, decimal, and fraction numbers, promotes a sense of number magnitude and estimation, and leads into algebraic thinking. What begins with a simple question of 1+1 ends up with students using algebraic equations to solve difficult problems. The incremental development of this lesson demonstrates our proven instructional strategy of Conceptual Layering that revolutionizes how mathematics is presented.
