Math for Christmas

12/12/2009

“What to do as we approach the final week before Christmas vacation?  I don’t remember by teacher prep courses
preparing me for this crazy week.  I can’t teach anything that will be tested, as the students will forget everything by the time I see them again in January.  The schedule this week is all convoluted anyway with assemblies, class parties, and such.  If only there were a high-interest activity that would engage my students while giving me the opportunity to teach some math!”
If you’ve had this mental conversation lately, or if you have it every year at this time, you’ll probably enjoy the new activity posted under the “Free Activities” tab of our website.  Simply look for the “Snowflakes” activity I just posted there.
Snowflake Activity download page
It will show you how to teach your students to create perfect five-point and six-point snowflakes.  Then you can use them to talk about angle measure, symmetry, and reflection.  They make great classroom decorations or can be taken home as gifts for parents.
Happy holidays and happy teaching,
Brad

I have tried several times to make the 5 point star snowflake. I actually try this every year and I still haven't figured out how to get 5 points on it. I am following the directions exactly as written and always end up with something odd. Can you provide any suggestions?
